    Back to the cold

The cold had to come to Chicago sometime, and it definitely did. Though for some reason, it got warmer at night — went from 5F to a pleasant 9F. I just got back from the mid 30s of Long Island, NY, though, so it wasn’t a huge adjustment. Still, going from cold to colder isn’t a whole lot of fun. I’ll try enabling the weather widget for this blog, but it seems to break with a PHP error in a matter of hours.

I have nothing of interest to post, so I’ll leave you with a toaster running NetBSD. It makes toast, plays MP3s, displays statistics, and does various other things. It was made as a proof-of-concept by Technologic Systems, who have an extensive write-up on it. And of course, there are pictures. NetBSD is made to run on anything, including Dreamcasts, Playstation 2s, SPARC, i386, and almost any other architecture you can throw at it. In the case of the toaster, a type of ARM processor made for prototyping boards is used. OpenBSD has the security niche, but NetBSD excels in portability and thus the embedded market.
